AIM partners with Born to be Wide on Label Evolution Event

Label Evolution Event To Shine Spotlight On New Music Businesses

AIM has partnered with Born To Be Wide as it returns for a special evening event. Focusing on new record label models combined with the customary mix of socialising and self-indulgent guest DJ sets, it will mark AIM’s first event in Scotland. The event will take place on 1 November at The Pleasance in Edinburgh and features four short talks followed by a discussion and then an evening socialising to a random selection of tunes.

“In 2018, there’s no ‘one size fits all’ for music creators and labels. says Jude McArdle, membership manager for AIM, who will introduce the evening. “These are some great examples of people thinking ‘outside the CD’ coming up with innovative ideas on how to build their business.”

The Label Evolution evening is geared to provide insights and inspiration and begins with each speaker giving a short presentation on their business model. This will be followed by a panel and questions from the audience.

Taking part are Euan Fryer, owner of Edinburgh’s Athens Of The North, which acquires the rights to vintage disco, soul and funk tracks, then uses these reissues to finance releases by new acts. He will be joined by self-releasing artist, rapper and owner of DIY Gang Entertainment ShaoDow,  Charlotte Spillerova from the Phases imprint, which is home to a roster of ambient and post-classical composers and focuses on digital platforms, as well as Charlotte Hazell label manager at London-based Killing Moon Records. An additional speaker is set to be announced.

Born To Be Wide and Wide Days Festival founder, Olaf Furniss, added: ‘The last time we did an event with AIM was in 2009 when Spotify was only a few months old, there was a lot of moaning about downloads and lots of record shops were closing.

‘These days new record shops are opening, download sales are declining and lots of people in Scotland are moaning about Spotify!’
