AIM PRESENTS:
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 WAYS:
THE ART OF SELLING MUSIC OVERSEAS
IN ASSOCIATION WITH UK TRADE AND INVESTMENT
6pm - 10pm, 2nd April 2009
PRS for Music Boardroom, London
The UK represents more than 8% of the global music market, and there is a British component to a large amount of music made and sold around the world. AIM’s next masterclass event will explore the very many routes to market; how independents large and small can create and fulfil demand for their music overseas.
The event, which is supported by UK Trade and Investment, will be divided into 4 sections:
1. UK Trade and Investment Introduction
Philippa McEvoy from UK Trade and Investment details the kind of support available to UK labels looking to develop their overseas business.
2. Panel Discussion: “Setting Up”
How do you create a buzz for your artists and their music overseas? How do you identify where your music is likely to find favour, and get the ball rolling in that territory? Panellists include:
• Rob Challice, Coda Agency
• Billy Grant, 2Point9
• Phil Patterson, UK Trade and Investment
• Tom Baker, Eat Your Own Ears
• Moderator: Doug D’Arcy, Songlines
3. Panel Discussion: “Export or License?”
There are a number of options for selling music overseas: do you export finished product yourself, do you license to a number of indies in different territories, do you license to a major? Do you open up an office in the territory? UK indies and international experts discuss their experiences and the pros and cons of each route. Panellists include:
• Dick Miller, Rightsman
• Graham Lambdon, EUK
• Peter Quicke, Ninja Tune
• Gary Levermore, Nettwerk
• Alex di Savoia, Aardvark Records
• Paul Hatcher - The Licensing Partnership
• Moderator: Phil Patterson, UK Trade and Investment
4. Panel Discussion: “International 2.0”
How is new technology changing the way international business is done? Can a global business now be run from a back office in Brixton? How are labels changing their approaches to international? Panellists include:
• Trevor Mcnamee, Jalapeno Records
• Safta Jaffery, Taste Music
• Danny Ryan, Kudos Records
• Kevin Brown - 360degrees Music
• Moderator: Alison Wenham, AIM
The event will conclude with networking drinks.
