INDEPENDENTS BAG 7 OUT OF 12 MERCURY NOMINATIONS
An impressive 7 of this year’s 12 Mercury Prize nominees are signed to independent record labels.
The nominations for the prize, which celebrates the best in British music, is testament to the role that independent labels play in supporting new musical talent.
The independent sector claimed four Mercury Prize wins in a row between 2003 and 2006, and earned two thirds of all nominations between 2005 and 2008: statistics which provide further evidence of the independent sector’s role as the lifeblood of the UK record industry.
This year’s independent nominees are:
ACCIDENTAL RECORDS: The Invisible – ‘The Invisible’
BABEL LABEL: Led Bid – ‘Sensible Shoes’
HOOP RECORDINGS: Lisa Hannigan – ‘See Sew’
NINJA TUNE: Speech Debelle – ‘Speech Therapy’
SAMADHISOUND: Sweet Billy Pilgrim – ‘Twice Born Men’
XL RECORDINGS: Friendly Fires – ‘Friendly Fires’
XL RECORDINGS: The Horrors – ‘Primary Colours’
Said Alison Wenham, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Association of Independent Music (AIM):
"The UK independent sector leads the field in terms of new artist and genre development. 2009's Mercury Prize nominee list emphatically proves this point and illustrates the sector's importance to the diversity and success of the UK record industry."
