06/10/2006 Worldwide Network Uniting Independent Music Companies Starts Work

Independent music companies are individually in a weak position but can gain strength from speaking and acting collectively. The Worldwide Independent Network (WIN) offers a chance to belong to something tangible, global and significant, and the Board meetings during the recent Popkomm music convention in Berlin confirmed the determination of members from well over a score of countries to make WIN active and effective as a global indie organisation.

As founding President of WIN Alison Wenham chaired the Board meeting which agreed on actions including a worldwide audit – intended to collect statistical information about the global value of the independent music sector. WIN committees took forward matters of public policy, organisation structure, and a strong marketing and communication programme. Plans for Merlin- a collective licensing and distribution data platform as the commercial arm of WIN- also made good progress. WIN intends to have a significant presence at Midem 2007, and to make several important announcements about the Network’s schedule for in its first fully operational year.

“WIN is taking off”, says Alison. “The member organisations’ enthusiasm, business direction and ideas will consolidate the global strength of independents and fuel some impressive joint projects which support and celebrate this music industry sector.”
