19/01/2007 AIM Secures Deal With GS1 to Simplify Bar Coding for Independents
Ever alert to the needs of small independent record labels, AIM has completed a deal with GS1 to make it easier for labels to get their music into stores, online and in to the charts, whilst receiving the royalties they rightly deserve. The Unique Music Initiative announced by AIM, BPI and GS1 will provide members with a discount in excess of £100 towards getting GS1 UK unique numbers that can be used to create bar codes.
Bar codes are unique numbers used globally to track music sales, both online and on the high street. The importance of correct identification of products should not be underestimated. Without this unique identification sales would not be tracked which could lead to incorrect royalty payment or music going out of stock from retail outlets, as well as many key retailers refusing to stock the music. Previously, the cost of joining GS1 was prohibitive to small and new independent labels, but the Unique Music initiative has removed this barrier to trade.
The scheme also entitles members to a free online training course, outlining how to get music listed in charts and online. The training course and discount will improve access to new digital markets for independent labels, enabling them to compete effectively. Since the launch of the initiative at Midem numerous members have already taken advantage of the deal.
