23/02/2007 Third AIM Mentoring Scheme Proves Invaluable For Industry's 'Young Hopefuls'
A recent major feature in The Telegraph described the innovative AIM mentoring scheme as “a scheme to allow some of the "old lags" of the music industry to share their expertise with young hopefuls, passing on the knowledge that might otherwise have taken years to acquire”.
In 2002 AIM set up the original mentoring scheme to help the managers of smaller labels to develop their management skills and grow their businesses, by pairing them up with experienced industry professionals for advice and guidance. The response to the scheme was huge, and demonstrated a real need for practical, personal advice amongst new labels. The scheme won praise from participants and press, and established regular repeats.
The 2006/7 scheme, funded by Arts Council England, has just given 25 label managers the opportunity to benefit from mentoring by carefully matched experienced industry professionals in their field, including label chiefs Jeremy Lascelles (The Echo Label) and Martin Goldschmidt (Cooking Vinyl), and artist managers Keith Harris (Stevie Wonder) and Bob Miller (Corrine Bailey Rae). Individual mentoring was supported by a series of workshops on marketing strategy, international licensing and financial management.
The scheme will draw to a close and be reviewed this month. AIM hopes to be able to repeat the scheme later in 2007 if funding can be obtained.
